Association of statin adherence with mortality in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
JAMA Cardiology Mar 27, 2019
Rodriguez F, et al. - In this retrospective cohort analysis involving 347,104 adults with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) who had stable statin prescriptions, researchers examined the link between statin adherence and mortality. Participants were aged 21-85 years and had ≥ 1 International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes for ASCVD on ≥ 2 dates in the past 2 years. The medication possession ratio defined adherence to statin. A greater risk of mortality was observed in relation to low adherence to statin therapy. Decreased likelihood for statin adherence was demonstrated by women, minorities, younger adults, and older adults. The significance of finding methods to enhance adherence was emphasized by the findings.
