Association of renal function with cognition, functional ability and mood in the oldest-old: The ‘Health and Anemia study’
Nephrology Apr 17, 2019
Mandelli S, et al. - In an Italian community-dwelling oldest-old population, researchers examined the link between kidney function, cognitive performance, functional abilities and mood. They measured glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using serum creatinine and applying the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease formula in 415 participants of the Health and Anemia study (a prospective, observational cohort study) who were oldest-old and did not have dementia. Univariate and multivariable linear regression models were used to determine cross-sectional relationships of kidney function with cognitive performance on various neuropsychological tests, basic and instrumental functional capacities and mood. Greater basic and instrumental functional disabilities were observed among the oldest-old with reduced kidney function. Although a reduction in cognitive function accompanied eGFR decline in these subjects, following adjustment for confounders cognitive function was no longer significantly linked to eGFR.
