Association of postfungal keratitis corneal scar features with visual acuity
JAMA Ophthalmology Feb 20, 2020
Menda SA, Das M, Panigrahi A, et al. - Researchers undertook this ancillary, prospective cross-sectional study to explore those features of a postfungal keratitis corneal scar that adds to reduced visual acuity following an episode of infectious keratitis. They also assessed if any corneal characteristics may be used as outcomes for clinical trials. They analyzed a subset of 71 patients who were managed for fungal keratitis in the Mycotic Ulcer Treatment Trial I. Best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) was found to be most related to irregular astigmatism and corneal scar density in multivariable linear regression models. Among individuals with relatively mild, healed fungal corneal ulcers, the likely crucial risk factors for BSCVA were both irregular astigmatism and corneal scar density. The cornea-specific outcome that could be applied to assess treatments for corneal ulcers may be the thinnest point of the corneal scar.
