Association of patterns of glaucomatous macular damage with contrast sensitivity and facial recognition in patients with glaucoma
JAMA Ophthalmology Jan 24, 2021
Hirji SH, Hood DC, Liebmann JM, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers sought to assess the correlation of patterns of glaucomatous macular damage with contrast sensitivity and facial recognition among patients with glaucoma. One hundred forty-four eyes of 72 consecutive patients [mean (SD) age 67.0 (11.6) years] with glaucoma with good visual acuity (20/40 or better in each eye) were analyzed. According to findings, diffuse rather than focal glaucomatous macular damage was correlated with diminished facial recognition and contrast sensitivity. Evaluation of macular optical coherence tomography and 10-2 VF and resultant detection of diffuse macular damage can help to reduce visual impairment associated with glaucoma.
