Association of myopia and intraocular pressure with retinal detachment in European descent participants of the UK Biobank cohort: A Mendelian randomization study
JAMA Ophthalmology Jun 16, 2020
Han X Ong JS, An J, et al. - Researchers here examined the correlation of myopia and intraocular pressure with retinal detachment. In European descent participants from the UK Biobank (UKBB) cohort (n = 405 692), the associations were determined between myopia, IOP, and retinal detachment risk using observational analyses and 2-sample mendelian randomization. Two novel retinal detachment genes were identified in genetic analyses of the 4,257 cases and 39,181 controls: COL22A1 (lead single-nucleotide variant rs11992725) and FAT3 (lead single-nucleotide variant rs10765568). They observed negative correlation of genetically assessed MSE refractive error with retinal detachment. Findings here support genetic associations between myopia and intraocular pressure with the risk of retinal detachment. They suggest that retinal detachment may be prevented with myopia prevention efforts.
