Association of maternal and paternal depression in the postnatal period with offspring depression at age 18 years
JAMA Psychiatry Mar 15, 2019
Gutierrez-Galve L, et al. - Via this cohort study of 3,176 father-offspring pairs, researchers examined whether paternal depression in the postnatal period is associated with offspring depression, as well as possible mediating and moderating factors that impact any link between paternal and offspring depression. Outcomes suggest that paternal depression in the postnatal period is linked to depression in girls at age 18 years, and this link is partially mediated by maternal depression. A mechanism of risk transmission may be early conduct disorder in children. These findings emphasize addressing paternal depression in perinatal services and considering both parents when one presents with depression.
