Association of lactation with maternal risk of type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of observational studies
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism May 28, 2021
Pinho-Gomes AC, Morelli G, Jones A, et al. - Via this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers examined the relationship between lactation and maternal risk of type 2 diabetes, including a potential graded link based on lactation duration. They analyzed relevant observational studies. This systematic review involved 22 studies (17 cohort studies and five cross-sectional studies), and a meta-analysis was conducted with 16 studies. A significantly decreased risk of maternal type 2 diabetes over the life course was observed in relation to lactation, this was evident especially in females with gestational diabetes. The protective impact appeared to increase with a longer span of lactation.
