Association of incident amelanotic melanoma with phenotypic characteristics, MC1R status, and prior amelanotic melanoma
JAMA Dermatology Oct 24, 2017
Vernali S, et al. - This paper analyzed if phenotypic characteristics, carriage of MC1R variants, and history of amelanotic melanoma displayed a connection with histopathologically amelanotic melanoma. The odds for development of amelanotic melanoma were raised by the absence of back nevi, the presence of many freckles, a sun-sensitive phenotypic index, and prior amelanotic melanoma. Earlier diagnosis and improved survival could be attained via an increased index of suspicion for melanoma in presenting nonpigmented lesions and more cautious analysis for signs of amelanotic melanoma, during the periodic skin examination in patients at increased odds of amelanotic melanoma.
