Association of high traditional masculinity and risk of suicide death: Secondary analysis of the add health study
JAMA Feb 20, 2020
Coleman D, et al. - The men die by suicide at 3.5 times the rate of women in the United States. One driver of this gender disparity may be high traditional masculinity (HTM), a set of norms that involves competitiveness, emotional restriction, and aggression. Quantitative investigations of HTM are associated with the discourse on hegemonic masculinity. Applying norm- and trait-based criteria, HTM men were seen to have higher suicidal ideation (SI), but to our knowledge, the correlation with suicide death has not been examined with a credible measure of HTM.
