Association of bulimia nervosa with long-term risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality among women
JAMA Jan 10, 2020
Tith RM, Paradis G, Potter BJ, et al. - Researchers conducted a longitudinal cohort study to explore the correlation between bulimia nervosa and the long-term risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in women. The study sample consisted of 416,709 women in Canada (818 women hospitalized for bulimia nervosa and 415,891 hospitalized for pregnancy-related events). Participants in the study were followed up for 12 years. Compared with women hospitalized for pregnancy-related events, those hospitalized for bulimia nervosa had 4.25 times the risk of any cardiovascular disease and 4.72 times the risk of death. The authors concluded that women with bulimia nervosa had a significantly higher risk of cardiovascular disease hospitalization and death up to 8 years after the index bulimia-related hospitalization. To prevent cardiovascular risk factors and disease, women with bulimia nervosa may benefit from closer management of this condition.
