Association of appendicular lean mass, and subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue with mortality in older Brazilians: he São Paulo Ageing & Health Study

Journal of Bone and Mineral Research Aug 08, 2019

de Santana FM, Domiciano DS, Gonçalves MA, et al. - In a cohort of elderly individuals, researchers explored the link between body composition by DXA and mortality. At baseline, 839 community-dwelling individuals ≥ 65 years of age were evaluated by DXA through a questionnaire, analysis of clinical information, laboratory examinations, and body composition. Only low muscle mass (LMM) was a predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular death among females. According to findings, LMM ascertained by appendicular lean mass adjusted by itself for fat and fat mass is linked to all-cause and cardiovascular mortality risks in the elderly. Visceral and subcutaneous fat have opposite roles in elderly men with respect to mortality risk. DXA may, therefore, be a promising tool for estimating the risk of death among the elderly.
