Association of anterior uveitis with acute Zika virus infection in adults
JAMA Ophthalmology Jan 24, 2021
Troumani Y, Touhami S, Jackson TL, et al. - In this cohort study involving 62 patients with red eyes and serologically or virologically confirmed systemic Zika virus (ZIKV) who were admitted to the Pointe-à-Pitre University Hospital from January 1, 2016, to January 1, 2017, for a systematic ophthalmologic examination, researchers sought to identify the ophthalmic findings associated with systemic ZIKV infection during the 2016 ZIKV outbreak in Guadeloupe in the French West Indies. In almost half of the patients with a red eye and acute systemic ZIKV infection, anterior uveitis was present; uveitis was usually bilateral and often linked to increased intraocular pressure. Such findings indicate that in patients with red eye and acute ZIKV infection, the ophthalmic examination should be performed to potentially diagnose and manage hypertensive anterior uveitis.
