Association of advanced glycation end products with peri-implant inflammation in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus patients

Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research Apr 12, 2018

Alrabiah M, et al. - Experts investigated the clinical and radiographic peri-implant parameters and levels of glycation end products (AGEs) among prediabetic, type 2 diabetic (T2DM), and non-diabetic patients. They also evaluated the correlation of AGEs with clinical peri-implant parameters [plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), and marginal bone loss (MBL)]. Findings suggested that in individuals with prediabetes and T2DM, clinical and radiographic peri-implant parameters were worse and levels of AGEs in peri-implant sulcular fluid (PISF) were increased. In prediabetes and T2DM, AGEs could play an important role in peri-implant inflammation. Authors noted significant positive associations between levels of AGEs and PD and MBL in T2DM patients, respectively.
