Association between type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypothyroidism: A case-control study

Alsolami AA, et al. – Investigators of this hospital-based case–control study assessed the relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypothyroidism in Saudi Arabia. Data were extracted from the medical records of 121 cases and 121 controls regarding age, sex, the presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), comorbidities, medication, and complications. They found that cases were older, had a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, had higher levels of HbA1c, and used insulin and oral hypoglycemic agents more frequently vs controls. These cases also found suffered from hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, diabetic foot, and nephropathy more so compared with controls. Overall, those with type 2 diabetes mellitus had an increased risk of hypothyroidism.
