Association between tumour infiltrating lymphocytes, histotype and clinical outcome in epithelial ovarian cancer
BMC Cancer Sep 25, 2017
James FR, et al. - In this work, researchers investigated the prognostic significance of tumour infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in a study of 953 invasive epithelial ovarian cancer tumour samples, both primary and metastatic, from 707 patients from the prospective population-based SEARCH study. Findings revealed a correlation between stromal and intratumoral TIL levels and in addition, their levels seemed correlated with clinical variables such as tumour histological subtype. Furthermore, they noticed that increased levels of both intratumoral and stromal TILs were associated with a better prognosis; however, this was only statistically significant for intratumoral TILs. This work suggested that a clinically useful immune prognostic indicator in epithelial ovarian cancer could be developed using this technique.
