Association between the Charlson Comorbidity Index and the risk of 30-day unplanned readmission in patients receiving maintenance dialysis

BMC Nephrology Oct 17, 2019

Lin Y, Yang C, Chu H, et al. - Using a national administrative database for hospitalized patients in China, the Hospital Quality Monitoring System, researchers investigated patients receiving hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) therapy in order to assess 30-day readmission in correlation with Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) in these patients who were admitted from January 2013 to December 2015. Of 124,721 patients, 19,893 (16.0%) had unplanned readmissions within 30 days. A rise in the risk of 30-day readmission was observed in relation to elevated CCI score vs patients without comorbidity. For those with CCI 3–4, 5–6 and > 6, the hazard ratio were estimated to be 1.01, 1.09, and 1.14, respectively. Findings revealed an independent link of CCI with the risk of 30-day readmission for patients on dialysis including HD and PD. CCI could serve for risk-stratification.
