Association between stillbirth at 23 weeks of gestation or greater and severe maternal morbidity
Obstetrics and Gynecology Nov 04, 2019
Lewkowitz AK, et al. - Researchers assessed 9,523 women who delivered stillborn fetuses and 1,353,044 with liveborn neonates in this retrospective cohort study in order to determine the risk of severe maternal morbidity in correlation to delivering stillborn fetuses at 23 weeks of gestation or more vs liveborn neonates. The analysis revealed an overall uncommon occurrence of severe maternal morbidity. However, there was a correlation of delivering a stillborn fetus 23 weeks of gestation or greater with an increased likelihood of severe maternal morbidity; this was especially noted among women with comorbidities, suggesting that vigilance about severe maternal morbidity during stillbirth delivery is must for healthcare providers.
