Association between sarcopenia and mortality in patients undergoing surgical excision of head and neck cancer

JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Jul 24, 2019

Stone L, et al. - Because of the association between sarcopenia and poor treatment outcomes in a variety of surgical fields, researchers ascertained if sarcopenia is linked to long-term survival after head and neck surgery. Two hundred sixty patients with head and neck cancer were included; 144 of them had sarcopenia. Lower 2-year overall survival was seen in the sarcopenia group vs the without sarcopenia group (71.9% vs 88.5%) in this cohort study with imaging analysis. There was also lower overall survival after 5 years in the sarcopenia group vs the without sarcopenia group (36.5% vs 60.5%). In patients with head and neck cancer who undergo surgery, sarcopenia might be related to declines in long-term survival.
