Association between renal function and troponin T over time in stable chronic kidney disease patients
Journal of the American Heart Association Nov 13, 2019
Chesnaye NC, Szummer K, Bárány P, et al. - Among older advanced-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients not on dialysis, researchers prospectively examined the link between cardiac troponin T (cTnT) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) over time in an observational prospective cohort study, named the EQUAL (European Quality Study) study. Participants had stage 4 to 5 CKD, aged ≥ 65 years, and were not on dialysis (incident estimated GFR, < 20 mL/min/1.73 m²). Over 4 years, high-sensitivity cTnT (hs-cTnT) trajectory was analyzed in correlation with both measured GFR and estimated GFR, using linear mixed models, adjusted for significant groups of confounders. A rise in hs-cTnT was observed over time as renal function declined in CKD patients. Findings also revealed an independent link of lower CKD stage (each 15 mL/min/1.73 m² lower) with a steeper hs-cTnT rise over time in the same range as other proved cardiovascular risk factors.
