Association between procalcitonin and acute kidney injury in patients with bacterial septic shock
Blood Purification Mar 25, 2021
Fu G, Zhan H, Li H, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis to examine the link between serum procalcitonin (PCT) and acute kidney injury (AKI) caused by bacterial septic shock. Patients who were admitted to the ICU from January 2015 to October 2018 were included herein. A total of 1,631 patients were screened, of those, 157 were involved in the primary analysis in which 84 (53.5%) had AKI. As per receiver operating characteristic analysis, 14 ng/mL was defined as the cutoff point for PCT to predict AKI occurrence, yielding a sensitivity and specificity of 63% and 67%, respectively. In septic shock patients, a nonlinear link between PCT and AKI was evident in this study. Experts suggested the likely utility of PCT as a potential biomarker of AKI in female patients younger than 75 years with bacterial septic shock.
