Association between physical activity, sedentary behaviors, sleep, diet, and adiposity among children and adolescents in China
Obesity Facts Nov 19, 2021
Ding C, Fan J, Yuan F, et al. - In children and adolescents, certain behaviors such as physical activity (PA), sedentary behaviors (SB), sleep, and diet hold importance as these are linked with adiposity in them. An additional advantage was seen in those who attained adequate amounts of appropriate multiple behavior. Meeting recommended behavioral guidelines or recommendations for children is crucial.
This is a cross-sectional analysis of 28,048 children aged 6–17 years in whom links between multiple lifestyle behaviors and body mass index (BMI) z-score and overweight/obese were assessed.
Negative link of sleep duration and diet score with BMI z-score, whereas positive correlation of moderate-to-vigorous PA and SB time with BMI z-score was identified.
A lower BMI z-score as well as lower odds of overweight/obesity were observed in relation to meeting the SB, sleep, and diet guidelines.
Significant interactions were found between PA and diet.
A lower risk of overweight/obesity was evident in those who met multiple guidelines vs meeting no guidelines.
The more guidelines were met, the lower were odds of overweight/obesity.
