Association between Toxoplasma gondii infection and thyroid dysfunction: A case-control seroprevalence study
BMC Infectious Diseases Sep 28, 2019
Alvarado-Esquivel C, Ramos-Nevarez A, Guido-Arreola CA, et al. - Researchers examined whether Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity is associated with thyroid dysfunction via performing a case control study. In a public hospital in Durango City, Mexico, they conducted an age- and gender-matched case-control study including 176 patients suffering from hypothyroidism (n = 161) or hyperthyroidism (n = 15) and 528 control individuals without these diseases. Eleven (6.3%) cases with thyroid dysfunction and 48 (9.1%) controls were seropositive for anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies. The analysis revealed no correlation of thyroid dysfunction with seropositivity to T. gondii in general. However, there appeared to be a negative correlation between infection and thyroid dysfunction and hypothyroidism in young (50 years of age or younger) patients. The investigators cautioned, however, that further study is required to confirm this negative correlation.
