Association between diabetes and subsequent Parkinson disease: A record-linkage cohort study
Neurology Jul 17, 2018
De Pablo-Fernandez E, et al. - Using linked English national hospital episode statistics and mortality data from 1999 to 2011, a retrospective cohort study was conducted to examine the relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and subsequent Parkinson disease (PD). For this analysis, a cohort of people admitted for hospital care with a coded diagnosis of T2DM was created and compared to a reference cohort. Using Cox regression models, subsequent PD risk was estimated. In this large cohort study, an increased rate of PD subsequent to T2DM was reported. The study findings might reflect common genetic tendency and/or disrupted common pathogenic pathways with potential clinical and therapeutic implications.
