Association between cilioretinal arteries and advanced age-related macular degeneration: Secondary analysis of the comparison of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Treatments Trials (CATT)
JAMA Nov 27, 2019
Bavinger JC, Ying G, Daniel E, et al. - In this cohort study of data from the Comparison of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Treatments Trials (CATT) conducted at 44 clinical centers in the United States among 350 people (700 eyes) in CATT with choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in the study eye and without advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in the fellow eye at baseline, experts intended to further describe the relationship between the presence of a cilioretinal arteries (CRAs) and incidence of geographic atrophy (GA) or CNV. Among CATT individuals who had unilateral exudative AMD, the analysis did not determine a protective relationship between CRAs and the incidence of CNV or GA. Why these findings were distinct from those of former publications is unclear yet may be partly defined by the various methods used to identify CRAs or by the baseline advanced disease in CATT people.
