Association between alcohol exposure and the risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in the Euro-MOTOR study

Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry Nov 14, 2018

D’Ovidio F, et al. - Researchers conducted this international, population-based, case-control study in Ireland, The Netherlands, and Italy to evaluate the role of alcohol—particularly red wine—in developing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Study participants included patients with incident ALS (n=1,557) and control individuals (n=2,922) who were matched for sex, age, and area of residency in a population-based design. Overall, exposure to alcohol consumption was not significantly associated with ALS risk. With respect to red wine consumption, only in Apulia (Italy) the double-fold increased risk (OR 2.53) remained significant. They noted a decreased risk for current alcohol consumers, while a significantly increased risk was detected among former drinkers.
