Assessing sexual function in middle-aged sexually active Spanish women: A community-based study focusing on the intimate partner
Menopause Jun 13, 2021
Martínez-Madrid MM, Arnau-Sánchez J, González-Cuello AM, et al. - Researchers conducted a cross-sectional study of 187 sexually active middle-aged Spanish women (median age: 49 years) with the aim to evaluate their sexual function as well as the influence of the relationship with the intimate partner, and the factors related to sexual function. The 6-item Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI-6), the short-form Woman Abuse Screening Tool (WAST), and a sociodemographic questionnaire were administered to the participants. Among participants, 90.4% had a steady intimate partner, 54.5% were postmenopausal, 43.3% had chronic diseases, 12.3% reported alcohol abuse, and 35.8% smoked. Low sexual function was prevalent among 33.16% of all the women, and 44.12% of the postmenopausal women (an FSFI-6 total score ≤ 19 reflects low sexual function). Women who were positively screened for IPV more commonly reported low sexual function. Findings suggest IPV to be a key factor contributing to deterioration of middle-aged women's sexual health.
