Assessing outcome measures used after rib fracture: A COSMIN systematic review
Injury Jul 11, 2019
Craxford S, et al. - Researchers conducted the first systematic review investigating outcome measures in rib fracture research and for the first time, applied the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist. Searching PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, AMED and PsycINFO, they identified a total of 64 relevant studies that included 19 different patient reported outcome measure instruments. The most widely used patient-reported outcome measure is SF-36 however its use is supported by only very poor quality evidence. Poor quality evidence was gained supporting the adequate content validity of the EQ-5D-5 L, the Medical Research Council (MRC) dyspnoea scale, Brief Pain Index (BPI) and McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ). They recommend using the EQ-5D-5 L in combination with the MRC and BPI or MPQ for future rib fracture studies in view of lack of high-quality evidence.
