Aortic stenosis is an independent predictor for outcome in patients with in-hospital cardiac arrest
Resuscitation Mar 23, 2019
Sulzgruber P, et al. - Given the scarcity of prognostic tools for decision-making regarding whether to continue advanced life support or limit life-sustaining interventions among those with in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA), researchers examined the prognostic value of AS on outcomes following IHCA. They identified 11,641 patients presenting with acute coronary syndrome; of these, 151 had received a standardized echocardiographic diagnostic immediately prior to an IHCA. A total of 51 individuals had AS (mild=12.5%; moderate=7.2%; severe=13.8%) within the entire study population. Outcomes suggested strong and independent predictive value of AS for mortality and poor outcome following IHCA. Thus, AS may have utility as an easily available predictive tool for risk stratification and decision-making.
