Anxiety as a risk factor for cognitive decline: A 12-year follow-up cohort study
The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Dec 02, 2018
Gulpers BJA, et al. - Researchers performed a 12-Year follow-up cohort study to determine the cognitive domains that are affected by anxiety. Using the Symptom Checklist-90, they assessed anxiety symptoms in 918 participants of the Maastricht Aging Study aged 50 years or older. Observations revealed that among participants without cognitive impairments at baseline, older adults displayed a decline of verbal memory and women had poorer performance in non-amnestic domains in correlation with anxiety symptoms. Reduction in the risk for developing neurodegenerative disease could be achieved using an adequate treatment of anxiety symptoms.
