Antipsychotic drug use and risk of stroke and myocardial infarction: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Psychiatry Jun 24, 2019
Zivkovic S, et al. - Researchers conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to explore if there were connections between antipsychotic (AP) drug use and stroke or myocardial infarction (MI) risk, and if these links differed among different sub-populations. They included 29 appropriate observational studies from 7,008 papers, 19 on stroke and 10 on MI. Findings suggested that an increased risk of stroke may be linked to AP drug use, but there is no clear evidence that in dementia patients this risk is further elevated. The effect of AP drug use on MI and stroke risk in different sub-populations needs to be addressed in further studies.
