Antioxidant supplementation and breast cancer prognosis in postmenopausal women undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Jan 24, 2019

Jung AY, et al. - Data from 2,223 postmenopausal females who were diagnosed with nonmetastatic breast cancer from the population-based Mamma Carcinoma Risk Factor Investigation (MARIE) study were analyzed to assess the relationship between postdiagnosis use of antioxidants and other supplements and their prognosis for mortality and recurrence-free survival in those who received chemotherapy and radiation therapy as well as overall. They observed 134 deaths from breast cancer and 200 recurrent cases of breast cancer after a median follow-up time of 6 years. Parallel use of antioxidant with chemotherapy/radiation therapy among 1,940 females was linked to an increased risk of total mortality and worsened recurrence-free survival. Overall, they noticed no association of postdiagnosis supplement use with breast cancer prognosis. Patients may want to avoid use of antioxidants during chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
