Antiepileptic drugs and suicide: The role of prior suicidal behavior and parental psychiatric disorder
Annals of Neurology Oct 26, 2019
Dreier JW, et al. - Researchers assessed data from the Danish National Prescription Register to determine whether prior suicidal behavior and familial predisposition to psychiatric disorders modify the connection between antiepileptic drug use and completed suicide. Between July 1997 and December 2015, they identified all incident users of antiepileptic drugs aged 15 years or older in Denmark. A total of 1,759 people completing suicide were identified. According to findings, the increased risk of suicide was associated with the use of antiepileptic drugs. The findings do not support that suicide risk following treatment with antiepileptic drugs identified in randomized trials is explained by prior suicidality or familial predisposition to psychiatric disorders. In general, the additional suicide risk associated with the use of antiepileptic drugs was low, and should be weighed against treatment benefits.
