Antiepileptic drug polytherapy in pregnant women with epilepsy
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Jun 09, 2018
Vajda FJE, et al. - In pregnant women with epilepsy treated with antiepileptic drug polytherapy, researchers analyzed seizure control and rates of fetal malformation. Using conventional statistical methods, they examined the Australian Pregnancy Register records of 1,810 pregnancies in women with epilepsy, 508 of whom were treated with antiepileptic drug polytherapy. It was noted that the combinations of lamotrigine and levetiracetam offered the possibility of seizure control and fetal safety. Results suggested that the use of antiepileptic drug combinations was not necessarily disadvantageous to mother and fetus if valproate and topiramate were avoided in pregnancy.
