Antibiotic prophylaxis during catheter-managed postoperative urinary retention after pelvic reconstructive surgery: A randomized controlled trial
Obstetrics and Gynecology Oct 04, 2019
Lavelle ES, Alam P, Meister M, et al. - Researchers examined if the incidence of culture-documented urinary tract infection among women with catheter-managed urinary retention after pelvic reconstructive surgery could be reduced with nitrofurantoin prophylaxis. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial, randomization of 154 participants from September 2016 to May 2018 was done. Of these, 151 were eligible for analysis; nitrofurantoin was administered to 75, and placebo was provided to 76. Observations revealed no reduced incidence of culture-proven urinary tract infection among these women when daily nitrofurantoin was provided. Urinary tract infection confirmation with culture was observed in only half of the symptomatic episodes.
