Antibiotic overconsumption in pregnant women with urinary tract symptoms in Uganda
Clinical Infectious Diseases Aug 11, 2017
Sekikubo M, et al. – During pregnancy physiological changes, like frequency, mimic urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms. In developing countries, frequent use of antibiotic therapy without culture confirmation led researchers to perform this work aimed at determining the prevalence of bacteriuria among pregnant women with and without UTI symptoms in Uganda. As per findings, dipslide possibly supported by a combination of nitrite and leukocyte esterase tests could be used to prevent excessive use of antibiotics. In this study, trained frontline health care professionals correctly diagnosed E. coli UTI and negative urine cultures, which would help preventing antibiotic misuse. In addition, regular screening for antibiotic resistance is suggested to improve correct treatment.
