An often-unrecognized entity as cause of recurrent infection after successfully treated two-stage exchange arthroplasty: Hematogenous infection
Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery Jun 12, 2018
Akgün D, et al. - Authors assessed the incidence of recurrent infections due to hematogenous seeding and treatment possibilities in a prospectively followed case series who underwent two-stage exchange arthroplasty. Findings suggested that after a successful two-stage exchange arthroplasty, hematogenous infection is a rare but very important cause of a reinfection. The awareness regarding this entity was raised with this study. Authors recommend that irrigation and debridement with implant retention in these cases should be considered along with a possible identification of a primary infection source.
