Amputation-free survival in 17,353 people at high risk for foot ulceration in diabetes: A national observational study
Diabetologia - Clinical and Experimental Diabetes and Metabolism Dec 02, 2018
Vadiveloo T, et al. - In this national observational study, researchers examined amputation-free survival in people at high risk for foot ulceration in diabetes (‘high-risk foot’), as well as compared different subcategories of a high-risk foot. From January 2008 to December 2011, a total of 17,353 people with diabetes and high-risk foot disease were identified from the Scotland-wide diabetes registry (Scottish Care Information-Diabetes: N = 247,278). The risk of death was up to nine times the risk of amputation in people judged to be at high risk of foot ulceration. The death rate for diabetes patients who had healed ulcers was higher than for those with active ulcers. People with active ulcers, however, had the highest risk of amputation.
