Altered cognitive function in systemic lupus erythematosus and associations with inflammation and functional and structural brain changes
Annals of Rheumatic Diseases Jun 15, 2019
Barraclough M, et al. - Using both behavioural and neuroimaging techniques, researchers compared cognitive function in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and healthy controls (HCs). Participants in the study were patients with SLE with stable disease and HCs. In patients with SLE, sustained attention was impaired. Poor DMN attenuation can contribute to cognitive impairment in SLE and data indicate that, in addition to mood and fatigue, inflammatory mechanisms and organ damage also affect cognitive functioning in SLE. The multifaceted nature of cognitive dysfunction in SLE implies that any therapeutic procedures should be tailored separately.
