Alcohol and delirium tremens: Effects of average number of drinks per day and beverage type
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Mar 22, 2019
Sørensen HJ, et al. - Via conducting this longitudinal study, researchers examined the predictive value of the average number of drinks per day and beverage type for delirium tremens (DT) in a cohort of 3,582 alcohol-dependent men and women aged 19–82 without previous DT. Participants were interviewed regarding alcohol consumption and beverage type at baseline in 1994–2005, and were followed through record linkage in Danish nationwide registers to identify incident DT. Outcomes suggested an increase in the risk of developing DT among alcohol-dependent men and women in correlation with daily alcohol intake above a threshold of 20 beverages or 240 g alcohol and a preference for spirits.
