Age-stratified national trends in pulmonary embolism admissions
Chest Aug 14, 2019
Pauley E, et al. - Using the National Inpatient Sample database, researchers investigated patients hospitalized with pulmonary embolism (PE), to study national trends in admission rate, discharge disposition, and length of stay (LOS) in these individuals. For hospitalizations between January 2000 and September 2015, of patients ≥ 20 years old with a primary diagnosis of PE, data were gathered. Across all age groups, a rise in the rate of hospitalization for PE was reported between 2000 and 2015. Although average LOS and inpatient mortality showed improvements, still, more costs attributable to hospitalizations were recorded and more resources (ie, home health) were needed by patients on discharge. Elderly patients most apparently exhibited increased resource utilization. The requirement for targeted clinical trials designed to better outcomes in all age sections was suggested.
