Age-related heterogeneity in dental caries and associated risk factors in individuals with cystic fibrosis ages 6–20 years: A pilot study
Journal of Cystic Fibrosis Jul 16, 2018
Chi DL, et al. - In this prospective, observational study, researchers examined individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) ages 6-20 at a single clinic in Washington state (N=85) in order to determine age-related heterogeneity in caries rates and potential risk factors in these subjects. They used cubic spline regression models to compare caries rates for enrolled CF participants and historical controls from NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey). Using generalized linear regression models, they determined correlates of age and caries in CF. They detected significantly lower caries in children ages 6-9 with CF vs controls; caries may be prevented in younger children with CF. However, in early adolescence, an apparent loss of protection was observed in relation to multiple risk factors.
