Age-related decline in patient-reported outcomes 2 and 5 years following total hip arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 16, 2019
Lalani A, et al. - Between May 2007 and December 2011, 3700 total hip arthroplasty (THA) cases were examined to quantify the consequence of advanced age on the Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS) and Lower Extremity Activity Scale (LEAS) following THA. Authors observed a decrease in scores by age for the LEAS, HOOS Activities of Daily Living, and HOOS Sport and Recreation domains. They noted the critical age of 63 years at which the correlation between age and outcome changed for the HOOS Pain, Symptom, Activities of Daily Living, and Quality of Life domains, whereas 72 years for the HOOS Sport and Recreation domain and the LEAS. While using for quality or value comparisons between hospitals or physicians, they suggested that patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) scores should be age-adjusted.
