Age as a risk factor for steroid-induced ocular hypertension in the non-paediatric population
British Journal of Ophthalmology Feb 26, 2020
Choi W, Bae HW, Choi EY, et al. - In this retrospective observational study, researchers assessed the age-related risk of steroid-induced ocular hypertension by analyzing intraocular pressure (IOP) changes following intravitreal dexamethasone (DEX, Ozurdex) implant injection. This investigation was carried out among individuals (n = 455; 570 eyes) who had received DEX injection. In patients aged ≤ 30 years, the IOP elevation rate was 42.9%. For older patients, the rate of adverse IOP elevations after the use of steroids was significantly lower than in younger patients. Caution is therefore necessary when prescribing steroids to younger patients (< 51 years).
