Adults with polio are at risk of hip fracture from middle age: A nationwide population-based cohort study
Injury Feb 22, 2019
Wu CH, et al. - In adults with polio, researchers assessed the risk and incidence of hip fracture (HF) via a national database. They used the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) code 138 for the identification of the patients with polio. Overall, 403 adults with polio (mean age ± standard deviation, 47.2 ± 8.6 years) were identified and five age- and sex-matched control subjects were selected randomly for each patient with polio. They excluded subjects aged <40 years. Receipt of hospitalization to care for an HF (ICD-9-CM code, 820) from January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2008 was used to recognize HF patients. They found a higher risk of developing HF in adults with polio. A HF was likely to occur in patients with polio aged >48.2 years. A customized HF prevention program in these subjects was considered important, with recommendations to initiate the program in middle-age and to include men.
