Adrenal incidentalomas are tied to increased risk of diabetes: Findings from a prospective study
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Jan 12, 2020
Reimondo G, Castellano E, Grosso M, et al. - Researchers conducted a prospective study of 601 individuals between January 2017 to June 2018 in order to determine the frequency of adrenal incidentalomas and their correlated comorbid conditions. They excluded individuals with known or suspected adrenal disease or malignancy. Increased frequency of adrenal incidentalomas was noted than previously reported. They noticed that diabetes was significantly correlated with the presence of adrenal incidentalomas. They found autonomous cortisol secretion in 50% of individuals who did not suppress cortisol < 50 nmol/L after 1 mg dexamethasone. In addition, this analysis is free from ascertainment bias because individuals with adrenal incidentalomas were drawn from a prospective cohort with the same risk of diabetes than the background population.
