Adrenal incidentalomas are tied to increased risk of diabetes: Findings from a prospective study
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Mar 21, 2020
Reimondo G, Castellano E, Grosso M, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers assessed the frequency of adrenal incidentalomas and their correlated comorbid conditions. This investigation was carried out at a radiology department at a public hospital. Participants in the study were unselected outpatients who had an abdominal CT from January 2017 to June 2018. Individuals with known or suspected adrenal disease or malignancy have been exempted. They enrolled 601 individuals, and in 7.3% of them an adrenal tumor was found serendipitously. According to findings, the prevalence is higher for adrenal incidentalomas than previously recorded. Additionally, adrenal incidentalomas are related to increased type 2 diabetes risk. This result is free of ascertainment bias due to the fact that patients with adrenal incidentalomas were drawn from a prospective cohort with the same diabetes risk as the background population.
