Acute vs delayed reverse total shoulder arthroplasty for the treatment of proximal humeral fractures in the elderly population: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Jan 20, 2019

Torchia MT, et al. - Using the MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases, investigators assessed 322 subjects older than 65 years who underwent reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) for displaced proximal humeral fractures to estimate the consequences of acute RTSA for fracture and delayed RTSA for fracture sequelae. They estimated weighted mean differences for range of motion, standardized mean differences for clinical outcome scores, and relative risks for dichotomous consequences. they noticed no variations in forward flexion, clinical outcome scores, or all-cause reoperation among studies directly confronting acute vs delayed RTSA. Although, cases undergoing delayed RTSA obtained 6° more external rotation as compared to those who underwent acute RTSA.
