Acute tubular injury is not a major mechanism for worsening renal function in patients treated for acute heart failure

Journal of Cardiac Failure Sep 01, 2017

Hodson D, et al. – Researchers presume that if the renal injury is a predominant mechanism in diuresis induced Worsening Renal Function (WRF), then levels of kidney injury biomarkers should increase with WRF. During aggressive diuresis of hospitalized Acute Heart Failure (AHF) patients, an acute tubular injury is not a dominant mechanism behind WRF. Neither WRF nor evidence of renal tubular injury appears to have a negative impact on mortality, in this setting. Study outcomes challenge traditionally held clinical connotations of WRF during treatment of AHF.
