Acute kidney injury in patients hospitalized with COVID-19

Hirsch JS, Ng JH, Ross DW, et al. - Researchers aimed at defining the rate of acute kidney injury (AKI) among cases hospitalized with COVID-19 and to inscribe various aspects of the phenomenology of AKI in this patient population. They identified the health records of 5,449 patients who were hospitalized with Covid-19 between March 1, and April 5, 2020, at 13 academic and community hospitals in Following were identified as risk factors for AKI: older age, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, black race, hypertension and need for ventilation and vasopressor medications. Among patients with AKI, death was reported for 694 (35%), discharge was reported in 519 (26%) and 780 (39%) were still hospitalized. Per findings, patients with Covid-19 disease frequently develop AKI. It occurs early and in temporal correlation with respiratory failure and is linked with a poor prognosis.
