Accuracy of skin cancer diagnosis by physician assistants compared with dermatologists in a large health care system
JAMA Dermatology Apr 21, 2018
Anderson AM, et al. - Experts sought to compare diagnostic accuracy for skin cancer of physician assistants (PAs) with that of dermatologists. PAs performed more skin biopsies per case of skin cancer diagnosed and diagnosed fewer melanomas in situ than dermatologists. This demonstrated that compared to the dermatologists, the diagnostic accuracy of PAs could be lower. Nonetheless, the access to care could be increased and the waiting times for appointments reduced with the availability of PAs. Results suggested the training, appropriate scope of practice, and supervision of PAs and other nonphysician practitioners in dermatology.
